Gout Diet to help fight arthritis and inflammation

A form of Arthritis, Gout is caused by too much Uric acid in your bloodstream that deposits in your joints and causes inflammation in your joints resulting in pain. To help alleviate this paint, a healthy well-balanced diet that helps maintain weight is optimal. I don’t believe in fad diets and not enjoying food, but I do believe that what you eat can make a difference. Recipes from my trim&TERRIFIC Eating Well to Fight Arthritis cookbook will help provide nutritious yet satisfying meals that help ease inflammation, with a whole chapter on Anti-Inflammatory foods, Vitamin C, Carotenoids, and Omega-3 Fatty Acids.

I recently made Guacamame on a TV show and OMG, it w as all the rage.  Simple and if you know me, you know I am an avocado addict, so combined with edamame this dip packs flavor and good-for-you ingredients.

These tips below will also aid in reducing Gout inflammation.

Purine breaks down as uric acid in the body causing Gout, or joint inflammation. Limiting certain foods will limit your purine intake. Speak with your doctor or dietitian before going on any diet

Animal proteins are high in purine: limit meat (especially red meat – beef, pork, lamb), poultry, and fish (especially fatty fish and seafood – tuna, shrimp, lobster and scallops).

Recipes for Gout and to help with arthritis

Eating Well to Fight Arthritis is different than any other cookbook with chapters like No Fuss Foods, Healthy Menus and packed with great tips and easy recipes that you already have the ingredients.  With a “D” for diabetic-friendly recipes and a “G” for gluten-free recipes, this book will make cooking easier by giving you wonderful options for 30 minute meals.  Check out some of my recipes like Fish Tacos, Watermelon and Tomato Salad and Chicken, Red Pepper, Spinach and White Bean Pizza–all recipes are lower in saturated fat which is so important!!

  • Limit your intake 4 – 6 ounces (113 to 170 grams) daily.
  • Severely limit high-purine foods: organ meats, herring, anchovies and mackerel.
  • Choose a low-fat diet to help cut down your saturated fat intake – which inhibits the body to eliminate uric acid.
  • High fat meals also promote obesity which exacerbates arthritis.
  • Alcohol, especially beer, also inhibits the body from eliminating uric acid
  • If not having a gout attack, limit alcohol consumption to one or two 5-ounce servings per d ay of wine is not likely to increase your risk.
  • Limit foods and beverages that contain high-fructose corn syrup as fructose is known to increase uric acid.
  • Research may suggest that fat-free and low-fat dairy consumption may reduce the risk for gout and Eating Well to Fight Arthritis cookbook contains an entire chapter devoted to Calcium-rich Bone Building dairy foods.
  • Be sure to drink plenty of fluids, especially water, as it helps the body eliminate uric acid.
  • 8 – 16 (8-ounce) glasses per day should be a goal.
  • Also, evidence suggests that men who drink 4 – 6 cups of coffee a day may lower their risk of gout.
