Mardi Gras King Cake Easiest Most Popular Recipe

For Mardi Gras I always have company and I think everyone comes to have my most popular Mardi Gras King Cake.  I have had people say they like this recipe better than the ones you buy in the store.  And, honestly, you can whip this up in minutes with reduced-fat crescent rolls–no complicated yeast dough here.  Another popular recipe I always make is my Candied Pecan Brie, a party staple at my house with rave reviews. King Cake: My Most Popular Recipe Ever!!!

No matter the time of year, this is probably my most popular recipe.  I keep it seasonal by just changing my icing colors to go with whatever theme holiday it is.  Starting with reduced-fat crescent rolls with a luscious rich cream cheese filling with lots of cinnamon makes this recipe hard to beat for the taste and it’s so simple.

Makes 16 servings

2 (8-ounce) cans reduced-fat crescent rolls
4 ounces reduced-fat cream cheese
2 tablespoons confectioners sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons butter
1/3 cup light brown sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Mardi Gras Icing (see recipe below)

1. Preheat oven 350°F. Coat 10-inch round pizza pan with nonstick cooking spray.
2. Separate crescent rolls at perforations, into 16 slices. Place slices around prepared pan with points in center. About halfway down from points, press seams together.
3. In mixing bowl, beat cream cheese, confectioners’ sugar, and vanilla until creamy. Spread on dough in center where seams have been pressed together.
4. In another small bowl, combine butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon with fork until crumbly. Sprinkle over cream cheese. Fold dough points over filling, then fold bottom of triangle over points forming a circular roll like a king cake.
5. Bake 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool slightly, drizzle with colored Mardi Gras Icing.

  1. Does the cream cheese part call for milk? The YouTube video said yes but I don’t see it listed in the instructions. Also, can I substitute to make it less healthy for a party? Have you tried it using cinnamon rolls? Is this way better? Thank you, I’m excited

  2. The cream cheese part is in the filling. The milk is in the icing but just use a little to make right consistency. I promise you aren’t compromising flavor with my trim and terrific approach. I have never tried with cinnamon rolls but they don’t come in the shape of crescent rolls which creates the king cake. I do like to add almond extract to the icing. And, sometimes now I add coconut and pecans. Hope this helps and I can’t wait for you to make the cake. Let me know!!
