This unstuffed cabbage crock pot recipe might be the easiest New Year’s Day recipe.  It may be more of a southern tradition to serve cabbage and black-eyed peas but why not turn it into a scrumptious effortless New Year Day meal.  Once you make this easy cabbage casserole, it will quickly be on your list of favorite crock pot dinner recipes.  You could even add black-eyed peas which I think bumps up the flavor and nutrition.

Even my kids request this recipe as growing up in Louisiana they love jambalaya.  You can think of it as a New Year's Day jambalaya crock pot recipe!
Servings 8 (1 cup) servings
Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground sirloin
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 3 cups instant brown rice
  • 1 (16-ounce) bag cole slaw
  • 1 (24-26-ounce) jar healthy marinara sauce
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground sirloin

  • 3 cups instant brown rice

Instructions
  1. In 3 1/2-6 quart slow cooker, insert plastic liner if desired. In large skillet, cook meat, onion, and garlic over medium heat and cook until meat is done, about 7 minutes. Drain any excess liquid. Add pepper.

  2. Add meat with remaining ingredients to slow cooker. Cover and cook on LOW 4-6 hours.

    Next time I make this, I will omit the brown sugar. Didn’t like the sweetness

      That’s fine! I wanted the recipe to resemble Stuffed Cabbage which has a little sweetness but the brown sugar certainly can be left out or adjusted. Thanks for the suggestion as I am sure there’s others that will like it without the sugar too! I think this was my most made recipe this season from KITCHEN 101.

    Can this be made with regular brown rice? I don’t like the taste of instant rice.

      The only reason I use instant rice in the recipe as it cooks quicker. Maybe add a little more liquid and cook a little longer.
